Wistin Abela, former Deputy PM passes away

Wistin Abela, a long-serving minister in successive Mintoff governments, has passed away at the age of 80.

Mr Abela, from Zejtun was successfully elected in his home district between 1966 and 1996.

He served as Finance Minister and was the Minister for Air Malta in its infancy,

He was Deputy Prime Minister between 1981 and 1982 and also served as the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

He was  responsible for Xandir Malta when it changed to colour television and was also responsible for Malta Shipbuilding.

He was deputy leader of the Labour Party and deputy prime minister between 1981 and 1982 before handing over to Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici.

Mr Abela had been suffering ill health for some years but managed to attend Dom Mintoff's funeral in 2012.
