For the first time, Malta will be participating in the European Move Week, to be held between the 7th and 13th of October; a week of physical activities across the islands, aimed at raising awareness on the benefits of physical exercise.

Organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Kunsill Malti għall-Isport (KMS) and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, will be pooling their resources together for the first time.

Move Week 2013 was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Stefan Buontempo, during a seminar in which young people have been invited to act as move agents of the European Move Week in Malta. These young people, led by the Kunsill Malti għall-Isport (KMS) and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, will be tasked to propose and organise physical activities across the country.

Parliamentary Secretary Buontempo said that the importance of this initiative has to be seen in a context of alarming obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer rates, which are prevalent in Malta.

Mr Buontempo stated that physical activity is not the remit of athletes only, and some sort of physical activity can do no harm. The activities of European Move Week will be for everyone to enjoy and he encouraged everybody to participate in physical activities not only during the European Move Week but all year round.

Parliamentary Secretary Buontempo concluded, that with some physical activity, our society can be healthier, both mentally and physically.

The seminar was led by Ms Laska Nenova, regional co-ordinator of the International Sport and Culture Association of which KMS is a member.
