Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has met Maltese nationals who are currently living in Belgium and Luxembourg, with many of them working with various European Union institutions.

The event was hosted at Dar Malta in Brussels by the Maltese Permanent Representative to the EU Marlene Bonnici, and the Maltese Ambassador to Belgium Vanessa Frazier. Dr Muscat was accompanied by his wife Michelle Muscat and Deputy Prime Minister and  Minister for European Affairs and Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto, Louis Grech.

The gathering gave the opportunity to hundreds of Maltese nationals, carrying out a variety of important functions within the European Union Institutions, to share their experiences with the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, as well as to meet each other.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the excellent work which the Maltese are known for. The Prime Minister also expressed his wish for the Maltese Community working in the various EU institutions to develop a network which can further benefit Malta’s interests at an EU level.

In particular, the PM noted that the experience of the Maltese community in Brussels and Luxembourg will be invaluable to Malta’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2017. He stressed that the Presidency will need to be a national effort in order to be a success.

The Prime Minister expressed the Government’s strong commitment in maintaining strong ties with Malta’s expatriate community, also noting the challenges which some Maltese families living in Brussels and Luxembourg face.

The Prime Minister is currently in Brussels to attend a meeting of the European Council of Heads of State and Government today, 22 May 2013. The meeting will discuss the European Union’s energy policies as well as the fight against tax fraud and evasion.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech attended a meeting of the General Affairs Council which was held in order to prepare for the European Council.
