Borg commitment may bring abortion, Church fears

The Church is worried that Malta’s nominee for EU Commissioner Tonio Borg is being made to undertake a commitment that will open the way for the introduction of abortion in Malta.  The local church is particularly worried that Borg has to commit himself to “actively support EU policies with regard to women’s rights.” This is generally understood to include the right to abortion.

Both Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg, have always insisted that abortion will never be made legal in Malta as long as they are running the country.

It is not clear yet whether Borg will sign the commitment demanded by the European parliament.

After grilling Tonio Borg for three hours last Tuesday, Parliament’s group leaders agreed that for Borg to be endorsed by a majority in the house, he should publicly commit to the following:

The delivery of the legislative proposal on tobacco products by January 2013;

The adoption of legislative proposals on animal cloning and novel food by mid-2013;

The full respect of the March 2013 deadline for the ban of animal testing for cosmetics;

Better enforcement of EU law on animal transport;

Full respect of the EU Charter on Fundamental rights, in particular of Article 21, as well as of EU anti-discrimination legislation and case-law;

Recognising the innate dignity of all citizens of the EU, regardless of their sexual orientations, actively working to address health inequalities and to acting against stigmatisation of people with HIV and AIDS;

Actively supporting EU policies with regard to women’s rights.

Jiena li ivvutajt le ghall-Ewropa aktar ma jghaddi z-zmien aktar qed inhoss paci fil-kuxjenza tieghi. Mintoff kien jghid li hemm L-Ewropa ta' Abel u l-Ewropa ta Kajjin. Fenech Adami, Simon Busuttil u l-qassis li ma ghadux maghna, qatt ma tkellmu fuq l-eEwropa ta' Kajjin dejjem semmew dik t'Abel. Issa, kif jghid Lawrence Gozi, kulhadd irid jerfa' ir-responsabilita' tieghu u din id-darba mhux quddiem il-poplu izda quddiem Dak li jista' kollox f'mewthom.
