European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and European Parliament President, former leader of the Party of  European Socialists (PES) Martin Schulz  congratulates Dr Joseph Muscat following electoral victory in Malta.

"In my own name and on behalf of the European Commission, I congratulate Dr Joseph Muscat for the electoral result obtained.

Dr Joseph Muscat can count on the continued commitment of the European Commission to work side by side with Malta and to overcome the challenges we face together as a Union.

I wish him every success throughout his mandate."

The European Parliament President Martin Schulz in a tweet said:

In a separate statement by the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz said: "I salute the Maltese people who have participated in one of the most active democratic elections in Europe with over 93% voting turnout. I congratulate the Labour Party and my highly regarded former colleague Joseph Muscat for winning the trust of the Maltese people in these elections.

I look forward to working closely together with a view to finding common answers to the challenges faced by our European Union.

Malta can look forward to continued good economic growth. Malta may be the smallest nation in the EU, yet it is strategically located and is enjoying a solid economic performance.

The European Parliament also looks forward to working closely with the Maltese government in the run-up and the deployment of its term at the helm of the Council of the European Union in January 2017.''

The Party of European Socialists (PES) “joins the wave of change in Europe” and  warmly welcomes the historic victory of the Labour Party (LP) and its leader Joseph Muscat in the Maltese general election. The Labour Party is on course to win 55% of the vote.

PES President Sergei Stanishev congratulated the Labour Party, stating that; “this landslide election result is the proof that the Labour Party has the full support of the citizens. After years of destructive conservative policies, this result is a vote of confidence to the progressive program of sustainable economy and social progress led by Joseph Muscat. I am confident that, under his helm, the new Maltese government will bring fair growth and jobs to Malta”.

Mr. Stanishev added: “Today, Malta takes a step forward and Europe takes a step closer to turning left".

Joseph Muscat was Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008, and he has been a vocal supporter of the PES campaign “Your future is my future: a European Youth Guarantee Now!”.
