Employers support PL on minimum wage

The Malta Employers’ Association (MEA) agrees with Labour Party leader Joseph Muscat’s pronouncement that the minimum wage should not be raised beyond cost of living adjustments.

MEA maintains that the best way to move people out of poverty is have competitive enterprises which are in a position to create more jobs, whilst ensuring that minimum labour standards are enforced.

The Association added that a more effective alternative to raising the minimum wage would be to increase living standards by moving as many employees as possible out of low paid jobs through the generation of higher value added jobs, training and education.

May I remind LESLIE DARMANIN that the 1987 election was not won fair and square by the PN but handed to them on a silver platter by the late Dom Mintoff.
If as he submitted that thousands were employed with the public sector on the eve of the '87 election, GonziPN acted in the same way during the 2008 election and only blue-eyed boys got promotions and the best jobs and lately it was even publicised that medical jobs were given to people which are not qualified for such a job.

What do you expect employers to say? Raise the minimum wage?
However it is rather gross to hear it coming from the Labour Party that it does not favour minimum wage increases in order to favour employers. That is one hell of a swing to the right. But that is not a surprise is it? Labour implemented a wage freeze policy in the eighties. It didn't help much as unemployment sky rocketed and Labour ended up employing thousands with the public sector on the eve of the 1987 election, alas to no avail.
