Debono: debate Cohabitation, IVF bills after election

Saturday, 11 Aug 2012, 18:23

MP Franco Debono thinks that it does not make sense to debate and pass in a hurry the Cohabitation and IVF bills promised years ago but only now brought to parliament in the last few weeks before the election. He believes that the IVF bill is not a decent bill and needs to be redrafted.

Debono writes in his latest blog that these bills and others like the regulation of party financing and the Autonomy of Parliament “should have been debated years, not months ago. They should have been in force years ago. But they haven’t to the detriment of this country and its people. PN has been in power 25 years and Dr Gonzi Prime Minister for past 9 years.”

Debono writes: “The next general election will not be the end of time, no? Since the government left these, and other important pieces of legislation, like the party financing law, about which, GRECO (The Council of Europe Group against Corruption) has been chasing us for years, till the very last minute, with the Budget taking the bulk of the time, then these and other important bills could be debated in the calmness after the next election instead of in the middle of an election campaign. Why all this hurry all of a sudden?”
