Office of the Commissioner for Refugees employees have joined the General Workers Union (GWU), the union said in astatement. The main purpose of the Office is to examine asylum applications independently, transparently and in the most efficient way while ensuring impartial decisions to assist in the protection of irregular migrants sent in these centres.
Secretary of Public Sector Division, Mr. Josef Bugeja called for an urgent meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the  Interior Ministry on behalf of the workers.
In view of their membership, the GWU's Public Sector Section now represents the entire sector of immigrants. This section represents AWAS workers, the Detention Centre and now the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees employees.
