Bishop Emanuel Gerada died this morning, aged 90.

Bishop Gerada had been a controversial figure in Malta and abroad. He was influential in bringing former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff and formal Archbishop Gonzi together and settle the dispute in the late 1960's.

The Curia said in a statement that Bishop Gerada, who is from Zejtun, was consecrated titular bishop of Nomentum and auxiliary to Archbishop Michael Gonzi in 1967.

Archbishop Gerada served in the Vatican's Diplomatic service as apostolic nuncio to El Salvador, Guatemala, Pakistan and Ireland.
