Appropriate decisions after March 2013 have kick started the work on the restoration and rehabilitation of the Citadella after the Malta Environment and Planning Authority had given the green light to the outline application related to its implementation back in October 2011. This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU funds Dr. Ian Borg during a press conference that was held in front of the Citadella Cathedral, Victoria, Gozo.

Dr. Borg said that although this project had the green light from MEPA in 2011, some teething problems that could have been addressed more efficiently by the previous administration were hindering the implementation of this project. Therefore he said that in these four months the required decisions were taken to address these problems.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that the allocation for this eu-funded project is just above €12 million and it envisages the implementation of the key actions identified in the Cittadella Masterplan (a policy document for the protection and management of this site). He continued in saying that this document foresees the creation of a Visitors’ Centre, the restoration of principal public buildings and the rehabilitation of public spaces and related infrastructural works within the Cittadella area.

Dr. Borg said that he chose to visit the Citadella Cathedral because its facade restoration will be included in this holistic regeneration plan for Citadella thanks to his secretariat timely intervention. Minister for Gozo Dr.Anton Refalo attended this press conference.
