PN’s first billboard: the lie of 20,000 new jobs

Gearing up for the coming election PN has today started erecting its first bill-board in the streets. The first bill-board boasts that government has created 20,000 new jobs in the last four years.

According to the EU's statistical agency Eurostat, the number of persons employed in Malta for more than one hour per week, has increased from 160,600 at the end of 2007 to 170,300 in 2011, an increase of 9,700 persons.

The government's claim about job creation has been exposed as a myth after the European Commission told Labour MEP Prof Edward Scicluna that neither Eurostat nor the national statistical bodies collect data on 'new jobs' since the European System of National Accounts (ESA 1995) does not recognise it as a measurable statistic.

Prof Scicluna said: "What prompted me to ask these questions was the  surprisingly unorthodox formula presented as to how 'new jobs' were calculated for the Prime Minister. The inclusion of redundancies seemed to me highly questionable and bordering on the downright unacceptable. But I wanted the confirmation of the Commission on this."

The Prime Minister's much touted claim to have created 20,000 new jobs figure is nothing more than a myth."

Last month, Prime Minister Gonzi told Parliament that the government had created nearly 24,000 new jobs since the start of 2008. According to the EU's statistical agency Eurostat, the number of persons employed in Malta for more than one hour per week, has increased from 160,600 at the end of 2007 to 170,300 in 2011, an increase of 9,700 persons.

"It is very amateurish and irresponsible for an official or advisor to pass on data to the Prime Minister based on such spurious estimations, especially when more officially reliable data from Eurostat is available. But I suppose Eurostat's data is not there to serve the government's agenda."

"It is very amateurish and irresponsible for an official or advisor to pass on data to the Prime....." and who can guarantee that it was a figure made up by an official or advisor and it's not simply another blatant lie by gonzi himself?

20,000 jobs li qieghed jiftahar bihom Gonzipn mhuma xejn hlief li aktar min nofs l-ammont huma xogholprekarjat ma kumpaniji. Ricentament kelli interview ghal-xoghol ma kumpanija hu l- general manager qalli li l-unika xoghol li nista noffrilek hu ta 3 ijiem fil-gimgha biss. Allura jien nistaqsi lil-prim ministru hu nghidlu dan il-job li offrieli dan il-general manager huwa wiehed mill eluf ta jobs li qieghed tipprova tinganna bil-poplu Malti biex taparsi m'hawnx krizi hu nuqqas ta xoghol fil-pajjiz. Hbieb ifthu ghajnejkhom sew hu widnejkhom biex ma thallhux lil ta Gonzipn jerga jingannawkom. Il-pajjiz ghandu bzonn bidla radikali mill aktar fiss possibli ghax Malta ghandha rata gholja ta qaghad . L-unika triq ghas- salvazzjoni ta pajjizna hu biss bi gvern gdid immexxi mill partit laburista bi prim ministru ghaqli, serju hu b' vizzjoni cara ghal holqien tax-xoghol u ghal fejqan ta pajjizna. Dear Dr Gonzi,

Would you mind printing a bill board reminding us when you gave yourself a pity Eur500.00 increase to yourself and your rest of friends? Would you be so gentle to remind us for how long this pitty increase of Eur 500.00 per week it lasted? Would you mind printing a billboard reminding us when was it that you decided to increasy the utility bills? And please, on this same billboard do give us some statistics of how did the price of oil flactuated as from the same date. If you prefer to, you may use the face of the ONE and ONLY on the billboards, that of RCC......for a change.

What about if gonzipn puts up a billboard about the 20,000,000+ lies that he has been saying since the last election, and putting a picture of Pinocchio on it.

Of course, il-Gonz is counting all the foreigners that work in the iGaming and financial services sectors! Even if you include all of these, the figures are a mirage of reality, seeing that at least 35% of them are precarious, definite-rolling contract part time.
