It's not the first time the opening games of the World Cup start off with some surprises. England for example rarely starts on a high and the second draw last night left most English fans in the UK and here in Malta feeling pretty despondent.
Yet for almost all the European favourites and more to be beaten takes some doing. Spain were trashed by the now mighty Swiss.
Their super status neighbours and foes the Germans were a bit unlucky, but still lost to Serbia. The English who drew what we thought was an easy group are so far addicted to draws.
And Spain who are hot favourites to win no less... to be embarrassed by the Swiss did at least lessen the shame of England. The Italians stuttered a bit, but in the way we have become accustomed pulled through to show, very annoyingly for English fans, why they always do so much better than the English.
Consistency and making the most of what you have and minimising mistakes seems to be the formula for teams to win.
So far we have not seen any amazing diplays of football. No one or two teams are really exciting. It is humdrum so far, vuvuzuela noise being the only exception to a World Cup that is still wobbling.
The Brightly and tightly orange dressed Dutch girls have so far been the main highlight.
Real footie afficionados are still waiting while their favourite teams have, to put it mildly a case of wobbles.
