The Mediterranean Conference Centre could be transformed into an opera house obver a two year period should a report by producer Cameron Mackintosh be accepted.
Sir Cameron is to present a report to the government proposing that the MCC be converted to a “major” theatre and a “grand house” over a two year period, the Sunday Times of Malta reported.
Describing the MCC as “ugly and badly laid out” he plans to turn it into a 1,700 to 1,800 seat auditorium with a “spacious 50-foot modern stage and fly tower.”
It seems Sir Cameron was commissioned to compile the report several months ago to “suggest a financially viable solution for the MCC.”
128 Maltese artistes signed a petition asking Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to ditch Master Architect Renzo Piano’s roofless theatre.
"Even if a full restoration of the old theatre was economically feasible it just wouldn't stack up as suitable for modern productions or the rightful expectations of the contemporary audiences to enjoy a show in comfortable glamorous surroundings with good sight lines and acoustics," said Sir Cameron.
