A Maltese registered ship, Il Toscana, was observed dumping a three-metre container in the sea near the Island of Elba, in Italian territorial waters.
A NATO ship searching the seabed of the region found a container, which according to the first reports seems to have been dumped in the sea some four months ago, Italian newspaper Il Manifesto said.
The first indication is that the container contains toxic waste. The Mediterranean region is an important route for toxic waste, which passes from the industrial western countries to African nations, in particular Somalia to finance the ongoing civil war.
On 9 July, the Green Ocean, the German environmentalist association, reported that a ship, il Toscana, with a Maltese flag, was observed dumping the cargo in the sea.
The ship is allegedly owned by a German industrialist.

This is disgraceful and should be pursued by the MMA urgently. The Med will be destroyed if this continues - no fishes and grave danger to human life. The offence should carry huge prison sentences and fines.

This is disgraceful and should be pursued by the MMA urgently. Mare Nostrum will be easily destroyed by this sort of thing- no fishes and grave danger to human life. It should carry massive prison sentences and fines.
