Fourth year University students have designed alternatives to the Hondoq Ir Rummien yacht marina project.
The alternatives include a nature park with a submerged kiosk … well, anything but a yacht marina.
The project is in collaboration with the University of Malta, Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Moviment Harsien Hondoq and the Local Council of Qala.
Paul Buttigieg, Qala local councilor said: “This project was aimed at creating awareness for our heritage, so that it can be enjoyed by both the locals and the tourists.”
Astrid Vella, FAA coordinator said: “FAA wished to do something positive to the country and set up these awards in conjunction with the university. The awards are aimed at making tomorrow’s architects sensitive to the particular needs of these areas.
The winners of the Julian Manduca Award for the Sustainable Development of Rural Areas award are: Joseph Galea, Nicky Psaila Savona and Zack Xuereb Conti

Hondoq is a necessity for the social aspect of the well being for everyone .
That area should be turned as a national park as these students have submitted
Well done to these students

How can we see all the plans that the students have submitted .They certainly look very interesting
I frequent that place most of the summer and can see with my own eyes how many people go there
It is always packed with locals enjoying themselves
If a Yacht marina is done Hondoq will be ruined .Does anyone swim around Msida or Mgarr harbour

An ultra modern & environmentally friendly way to restore the mess left after the rock excavation of 40 years ago. A big thumbs up to these student!! Hope that the Ministry for Gozo & the Qala local council apply for EU funds to fund this popular area. That's for Eco-Gozo!

The students plans are very innovative.
The government should note that we have people that are more than qualified to do plans for major projects, we don't have to pay millions to some foreigner.
These plans for Hondoq show exactly what eco gozo should be. Not the monstrous plans that are currently being proposed by the developers. all they want is a concrete jungle and yacht marina so that only a few elite can enjoy.
whereas with these plans that the students proposed, the hondoq area could be enjoyed by EVERYONE.
Well done to all those who were involved.
