The meeting of the PN Executive which was held yesterday, and in which the JPO’s private member divorce bill was discussed, remained inconclusive. Sources close to the PN executive, who spoke to ONE news said that, as expected, a number of ministers spoke against divorce during the meeting.
The meeting was characterised by very strong statements. Among those who spoke against the introduction of divorce were ministers Karm Mifsud Bonnici, Tonio Fenech and Tonio Borg.
At one point during their speeches, Tonio Borg and Tonio Fenech attempted to speak about divorce while associating it with abortion. This fact greatly angered Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando who said that whoever argues in this manner, is one who has no leg to stand on vis-à-vis the issue of divorce.
The meeting ended in an inconclusive manner, so that it was adjourned to September next.
While Lawrence Gonzi does everything possible to play for time on this issue, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando insists that by January of next year Parliament should have discussed the motion.
