Tonio Borg has been nominated by Malta to replace former Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection John Dalli after his resignation on 16 October 2012. Despite Tonio Borg’s well-known stands against women’s, LGBT’s and migrants’ rights, President José Manuel Barroso approved his nomination. It still has to be agreed by the European Parliament and European Council.
We believe that this candidacy is clearly damaging for Europe and seriously concerning for the quality of health services enjoyed by those millions of European citizens.
European Humanist Federation (EHF) President Pierre Galand wrote to Mr Barroso, President of the European Commission, to express these concerns :
“Dear Mr President,
I would hereby like to call your attention to the nomination of Dr Tonio Borg as the new Commissioner responsible for Health and Consumer Protection for the remainder of the mandate of the College.
As stated in Article 2 of the TEU, the European Union has always been deeply committed to the promotion of human rights, in particular the rights of minorities, and also common European principles such as equality between men and women and non-discrimination.
There are serious doubts as to whether Mr Tonio Borg shares this commitment. As Minister of Justice in Malta, he repeatedly and vigorously opposed women’s sexual and reproductive rights and even campaigned in 2004 to constitutionalize the abortion ban in his home country. In 2011, he also strongly opposed the legalisation of divorce in Malta. In addition, he has openly expressed contempt for the LGBT community and opposed the recognition of the rights of homosexual co-habiting couples in the Maltese Parliament in 2009. Finally, as Home Affairs Minister, he clearly failed to protect the rights of illegal migrants. Despite several calls from human rights organisations, he oversaw in 2001 the deportation of more than 200 Eritreans back to Eritrea where several of them were eventually tortured and killed.
Given the strong commitment of the European Commission to protecting and promoting human rights and non-discrimination, we are therefore extremely concerned to note that you approved Mr Borg’s candidacy as European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection. We believe this candidacy is clearly damaging to the image of Malta in the European Union and is also an ambiguous signal coming from the institution over which you preside.
We are strongly convinced that other candidates, who better reflect European values, could be appointed by Malta for the Health and Consumer Protection portfolio. We therefore respectfully ask you to support any initiative in that direction and reconsider Mr Borg’s candidacy.
Yours sincerely,
Pierre Galand
EHF President”

- Thu 01-Nov-2012, 21:05I do agree that Tonio Borg is unsuitable for the post for various reasons:
a. he has never shown himself to be a competent administrator.....rather a dull minister indeed!
b. secondly, he is so conservative that he will give the impression that Malta is a colony of the Vatican.
However I feel that his championing of the cause for entrenching an anti-abortion law in the constitution was a highly debatable and anti-democractic move that lost him the sympathy of all those that are liberal and secular minded.
Also, his tactic was seriously flawed and was criticised by his ex-leader, Fenech Adami, himself.
Tonio should stay in Malta....and in the opposition benches.

- Wed 31-Oct-2012, 22:41I predict Labour's decision to endorse Tonio Borg will be the turning point in the LP's fortunes. I say this with a heavy heart since I supported Labour ever since i could talk.
The image of a progressive party which the LP had slowly nurtured over the past years was shattered in the matter of a day.
If the PL truly cared about progress they would not have approved Tonio Borg's nomination under ANY circumstance.
I can think of a couple of reasons why the LP chose to endorse him.
One of them might be because they thought a leadership contest in the PN would be to the PL's advantage. Think again, most of the PN candidates stand to improve their party's credibility compared to Borg. Regardless the PL should never have compromise on its values in the interest of political expedience.
An other reason might be that the LP didn't want to be seen as 'damaging the country's reputation'. This implies that the PL thinks Malta's reputation is better served sending a bigot as our representative than not sending anyone at all. Not to mention Gonzi ultimately has the power to nominate anyone he wants. Whether the PL aproved Borg or not would have made little difference to the outcome. Which again raises the question, why compromise on the LP's professed values?
Sending Borg to the EU with Muscat's blessing will only damage Malta in the long run, by showing Europe that Malta is united in caring little about civil liberties.
In the medium term people will slowly start seeing the PL's progressive brand as a mere veil disguising a party which is just as close minded and backwards facing as the PN.
In the short term, I wouldn't be surprised if the next set of polls start showing a steady haemorrhaging of the Liberal voters away from the LP - which will be hard to recoup.
The LP having monumentally compromised on something as fundamental as the promotion of equality and civil liberties, I can only say that such an outcome in voting intentions would be well and truly deserved.

- Wed 31-Oct-2012, 10:44Tonio Borg might be a decent person but he is more consevative than the Pope. He is not suitable for the post and I hope he gets knocked back and Barroso reconsiders.

- Wed 31-Oct-2012, 09:56It has been obvious from the very start that Tonio Borg was not the ideal person to replace John Dalli. Gonzipn is using this nomination to play for time, to lure people's attention from the real turnmoil inside the party. It is a way of shaking rust and fill a vacum with hopes of a new face that will save the sinking ship. It is a dirty game to which Gonzipn has been so well known. The possibility is that Tonio Borg will be back with a further stain to our credibility in the eyes of European Union. God save this country.
