Does govt consider getting rid of bendy buses?

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that government is committed to ensure that the service provided by Arriva continues to improve but “from the information I have there has been no report about the bendy buses.” In parliament Labour MP Noel Farrugia asked the Prime Minister as head of the task force on transport whether it has received reports about incidents caused by bendy buses and whether any report ahs been prepared on the option of removing them from Malta’s roads.

The comments of London mayor Boris Johnson at the Conservative Party conference a few days ago, where he joked that these bendy buses, which he removed from London, are now “clogging up the streets of Malta”, is still fresh.

In reply, the Maltese Ministry for Transport said that the “articulated buses” (the Ministry did not use the popular ‘bendy’ adjective), are causing less congestion because they carry more passengers and therefore less buses are running around.

On the 4th July 2012 Austin Gatt boldly declared that “Iż-żmien tal-bużulotti għadda” (The time for tricks is over) and added that “Illum għandna l-eqdem flotta tal-karozzi tal-linja fl-Ewropa: għada jkollna aktarx l-aktar flotta żagħżugħa fid-dinja.” (Today we have the oldest public bus fleet in Europe; tomorrow most probably we will have the youngest one in the world).
