Real Madrid's Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been summoned as a defence witness in a trial of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi for allegedly paying for sex with an underage prostitute known as Ruby and abusing his power to get her released by police on an unrelated theft claim.

Ruby, a former night-club dancer whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, told investigators she had a hotel tryst with the soccer star.

Ronaldo has been called to testify on November 5 along with two TV starlets, Belen Rodriguez and Aida Yespica; Daniela Santanche', a member of Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party; and TV and print journalist Carlo Rossella.

Both Santanche' and Rossella are friends of the ex-premier and have said there was nothing untoward about the 'bunga bunga' parties where he is alleged to have had sex with more than 30 alleged prostitutes including Ruby, the only one under the age of 18.

The sex charge carries a jail term of up to three years while the maximum term for abuse of power is 12.

Berlusconi and Ruby have denied having sex.

She admits receiving expensive gifts and cash from him.
