Former pop star Gary Glitter was arrested on Sunday as part of the widening police investigation into the late Jimmy Savile.

Now 68, Glitter was picked up on suspicion of sexual offences. His is the first arrest following the exposure ofBBC presenter Savile, who died last year, as a serial child abuser.

Glitter went to prison in Vietnam in 2006 for abusing two young girls, and had a long-standing reputation for enjoying younger company.

In one of the accusations against Savile both men are said to have enagaged in sex with young girls in a BBCdressing room.

Glitter is unlikely to be the last big name to be swept up in the Savile probe; Savile’s long career meant he was a sought-after entry to the entertainment world, and police have already said other celebrities are in their sights.
