Dutch side Ajax claimed the scalp of Manchester City with a 3-1 victory in their Champions League Group D match, a result which leave City bottom of the group and in serious danger of being eliminated from the competition.

Arsenal were also beaten, losing 2-0 at home to Schalke. The Gunners remain second in Group A, a point behind the Bundesliga side.

Real Madrid were on the receiving end of a 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in Group D but both clubs have a healthy lead over Ajax and Man City.

Group C leaders Malaga looked good value for the 1-0 home win against a struggling AC Milan leaving the Italians five points adrift of the Spanish club.

Tonight Tottemham Hotspur travel to Maribor for their Europa League Group J game with a number of first team players missing including Gareth Bale and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Newcastle are home to Belgium club Brugge and Liverpool will want the Anfield supporters to give them a lift for their tie against Russian club Makhachkala.

Italian clubs could be in for a testing night. Inter could have a bruising encounter withPartisan Belgrade. Lazio are away to Greek side Panathiaiikos, Udinese travel to Swiss club BSC Young Boys  and Napoli visit Dnipropetrovsk of Ukraine
