MP Franco Debono says in his latest post on his blog: “If there was a vote about the Tonio Borg’s nomination (as EU Commissioner) I would vote against it. I think this nomination was a big gamble and should be discussed immediately in Parliament.”
Debono goes on to say that “the government seems to have consulted no one, except maybe Richard Cachia Caruana, the disgraced Malta’s EU Permanent Representative.”
Debono says that: “No consensus was sought. The Opposition has made it clear they are against this nomination.”
Debono’s political judgement of Borg’s achievement is scathing: “Can someone mention a single major achievement for Tonio Borg in the fifteen years he has been Minister? What has he been doing? Not a single major reform comes to mind: just dullness, incompetence and failures.”
