The indiscriminate censorship of anything Labour on state broadcasting continued on TVM's main news bulletin yesterday evening when the presence of Malta's Opposition Leader, Joseph Muscat during an official ceremony to mark the European Citizen Award to Mons. Victor Grech was cleft out of the news item broadcast.
PBS not only refrained from mentioning the presence of Dr. Muscat but also refrained from showing him in the video broadcast to accompany the news item.
Saturday evening - Mgr Victor Grech was awarded the European Citizen's Prize 2012 on Saturday evening at Europe House in Valletta by MEPs Louis Grech and Simon Busuttil acting on behalf of the President of the European Parliament.
The European Citizen's Prize is awarded by the European Parliament to individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding committment in promoting the European spirit.
Mgr Victor Grech has been jointly nominated in May by MEPs Louis Grech and Simon Busuttil.
The Maltese MEPs have come together to put forward Mgr Grech for this award in a showing of national unity and appreciation across the board for the contribution of Mgr Victor Grech to Maltese society. Joint MEP nominations for this award are in fact not the rule but the exception.
Mgr Grech will now be invited to Brussels for a meeting with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.
The award ceremony in Malta was held by the Office of the European Parliament in Malta in the presence of several distiguished guests.
The medal representing the citizen's prize was awarded by the MEPs after speeches by MEPs Joseph Cuschieri, Simon Busuttil and Louis Grech highlighting the direct relevance of the commitment of Mgr Victor Grech to the European values of solidarity, respect of human dignity and the engagement of the citizen in advancing the prosperity of his community.
MEP Cuschieri highlighted the contribution of Caritas to Maltese society.
MEP Simon Busuttil declared that through the nomination the MEPs wanted to thank Mgr Grech for his work.
MEP Louis Grech highlighted that the prize is not only for Mgr Grech but for all those who have worked with him and also for the victims which he helps.
Mgr Victor Grech concluded the ceremony with a speech including this statement "I am proud to be Maltese and I am proud to be European". In his speech he underlined his satisfation that this award was the result of cooperation across the political divide. He also underlined the relevance of the European values today and the benefits of society from the European Union while underlining that the European Union has, as yet, not achieved its objectives in its fight against poverty and social exclusion.
