In his latest blog entry, PN MP Franco Debono claims that PN strategists had planned an election in October before the Budget, and that in February ministers has been asked to present a report on the projects which could be finished by October. It would be a “big gamble” to present the Budget before the election, he said. Debono also described PM Lawrence Gonzi as "Malta's Hitler" after the "campaign of moral violence" with his blessing".
A general election cannot be held in October as there is a minimum period of around 5 weeks from the dissolution of Parliament to the election date.
Franco Debono writes:
“Since January when the greatest trouble for the PN erupted, and Parliament was reduced to a talking shop because they were afraid to take votes, PN strategists had decided that in those circumstances, especially after the government lost a Minister and RCC, it wold be madness to drag on till another Budget and that the election should be called in October/November and NOT later.
“In February Ministers had been asked to present a report about which projects could be finished by October.
“They thought they would dump me, JPO and Jesmond, present the new candidates and sprint. Their plan was to use the Independence festivities as a springboard for the election campaign. No momentum, no sprint just lethargy and more dullness.
“He could have gone to the polls and then presented the Budget if he won.
“EVERYTHING FAILED. ALL THEIR PLANS FAILED MISERABLY.
“Their only problem is that they just cannot go to the polls with minus 12%. It has nothing to do with the national interest. All this goes against the national interest.
“To present a Budget in these circumstances is a big gamble.
“This is why they are going to spoil your Christmas. For their failures they will blame you, and you will have to pay.
“The real cause of all these troubles are Austin Gatt and Manuel Delia with his bendy reform. Why don’t they just resign and leave us all in peace?”
