PM without a majority

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi stubbornly refuses to admit that he does not have a majority in parliament and wants to hang on to running the country the country as if he enjoys the support of 99% in parliament and in the country.

Once again MP Franco Debono still sitting on the government side before parliament went into its summer recess that end tomorrow has called on Lawrence Gonzi to call an election before Christmas.

This summer over and over again Dr. Debono has said that he will not support Gonzi’s government as long as Austin Gatt is a cabinet member and he repeats this warning on one of his latest blogs.

Franco Debono also repeats his previous comment that the timing of this budget renders it irrelevant. He says that if it had to be a good budget it will be even more suspicious as the people cannot be fooled in believing that good budgets happen always immediately before an election. He also says that by hanging on, the Gonzi administration is going against the National interest.

Parliament reopens tomorrow. Debono has said he will be tabling a motion of no confidence in Health Minister Joe Cassar. Lawrence Gonzi can ill afford to be conditioned in changing yet another Minister. He has lost Carm Mifsud Bonnici, he can lose Joe Cassar through Debono’s Parliamentary motion.

Debono has also said he will vote for Labour’s motion on the privatization of car parks.

How long will Gonzi remain in denial about the simple fact that he does enjoy a majority anymore in parliament? He started off this legislature with a few hundreds of votes more than Labour thanks to a deceitful campaign of un-kept promises and favours given in exchange for votes on the eve of the election. His half one seat majority has been reduced to a coalition with MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.

Yet he behaves as if he has massive support in country and parliament and is going to remain in power for all eternity. He talks about power and government as if they were his private property.

BETTER FUTURE

Franco is doing his best to get his programme through, or as much as feasible. As soon as he realises that the PN will not allow him any credit, he will sink the drowning ship.
