Discussions at the Labour Party Congress have led to clear guidelines which the PL has approved as the framework for the election manifesto. These twelve guidelines express the people’s wishes and expectation for the next government of our Islands. They have been put together by the people for a government of the people. The Labour party has heeded this advice and will not renege on its promises.
On the economy of the country, it is very clear that Malta needs economic growth. This will be generated in such a way that all the different levels of society will benefit.
GonziPN’s management of our finances leaves a lot to be desired. National debt has reached epic proportions. The Gonzi administration has squandered large sums of money by embarking on wasteful projects that have little benefit on the people. The PL will adopt a careful financial policy that will manage people’s money wisely.
Family life is very dear to the PL. In recent years inflation has gradually reduced spending power and many families find it difficult to cope. The Labour party is committed to the creation of a new middle-class that will improve living standards for the Maltese people.
Businesses in Malta will be given the security to maintain levels and the opportunity to expand. The PL will tackle the problem of bureaucracy thereby ensuring easier work practices for entrepreneurs.
The Gonzi administration has neglected the energy sector. It has had no concrete plan for expansion without burdening the population. The Labour party will reduce water and electricity bills. It will introduce an energy policy to which the end beneficiary is the consumer – families and businesses in Malta and Gozo.
Education is one of the major pillars in any society. It is the foundation for many sectors and the Labour Party in government will give it the utmost importance. The PL has already launched the guarantee for youths wherein all those reaching the age of 16 will be given the opportunity to further their studies, training or jobs.
The guidelines adopted on employment are clear. A Labour government will control precarious work and will work hard for the creation of meaningful employment that will afford families a better quality of life.
Health services in Malta need substantial improvement. The PL in government will create a primary health care system and will administer current health services professionally to enable Maltese citizens to obtain a better service from our health care institutions.
Air quality has been neglected. Several areas in Malta and Gozo fall below recommended safety levels. The discussions will help the PL move in the right direction to improve the quality o the air that our children breathe.
The PL in government will restore social values that guarantee equal opportunities for Maltese society in general. It will ensure that minority rights are respected and that the state will not be in a position to take decisions that affect people’s personal lives.
Gozo will also feature prominently in the PL election manifesto. The message that Gozitan workers should have job opportunities in Gozo was clear and the PL in government will work to this end.
A Labour government will restore transparency and accountability in governance. It will be closer to the people to maintain a life-link with the electorate, throughout its legislature.
These twelve points will form the basis for the electoral manifesto for the forthcoming general elections. Labour leaders have listened carefully to the people’s concerns and will work hard to offer remedies that will improve quality of life in Malta and Gozo. The PL has not embarked on a campaign promising the world before the election and forgetting its promises on election.
A new Labour government will be guided by the people’s expectations and govern for the benefit of the people. A new Labour government will create a future for our country; a future that will unite people from all walks of life, whatever their social standing or political belief.
