[LISTEN]"Never heard of minimum wage freeze"-UĦM

“I have never heard the Labour Party or Joseph Muscat saying that they will freeze the minimum wage.”  This was confirmed to ONE News by Josef Vella, the secretary general of the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin, who was present at the Labour Congress where the Labour Leader Joseph Muscat first spoke about the national minimum wage.

Listen to Josef Vella declaring this in simple language:

This declaration by Josef Vella contradicts what the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said a few days ago when, to obtain political mileage, he alleged that the Labour Party wants to freeze the minimum wage.

Indeed Dr Muscat at the Congress explained that under a new government the minimum wage would increase with the cost of living adjustments.  He added that any increase in wages, apart from the statutory increasement to make up for the cost of living which will always be given, must be linked to economic growth.

Josef Vella further explained the UĦM’s position in this regard:
Dr Muscat has interpreted PM Gonzi's claims on the minimum wage freeze as an attack on social partners.
