Friday evening the Malta Racing Club continued with its driver of the month award which had to be postponed due to the summer break.
The winner for the month of July is veteran champion driver Frencu Cassar. 63-year-old Cassar has spent his whole life in this sport with his glory days being mostly in the 80’s.
Up until now he is the driver with the most Champion Driver titles and he has won numerous championships. The horses he has driven are countless but he will always remember his first victory on Un Reve Royal way back in 1972. For many years he has been the retained driver of Fenech Stables and although now he is not driving as many horses as before, due to the fact that many owners drive their own and others prefer the younger generation, he is getting his fair share of results. In fact in the last 10 years he has managed to finish three times 4th in the Championship classification the last time being in 2006.
This season he has already won 6 races, one of them last Friday and July was a particularly good month for him as he managed to win the Premier Category final with Milord Barbes and the Bronze Consolation Final with Orio de Marancourt apart from another race with Naccarat Campbell.
Frencu Cassar is very encouraging to young emerging drivers and incidentally last Friday his only son Anton was making his debut as a new MRC licenced driver. He advised the youngsters to drive carefully without too much confidence and never to overuse the whip whilst not being afraid to admit when they make a mistake.
The driver of the month award was sponsored by Anthony Axisa & Sons and a token of the occasion was presented to Frencu Cassar by George Axisa.
