World Animal Day has been celebrated each year on the 4th October, since its onset in Florence in 1931. It has become a day for remembering and paying tribute to all animals and the people who love and respect them, with special events planned, on or around this day, all over the globe.

In 2009 Malta now joined the rest of the world in these celebrations. And it will be joining them again this year with an event being held on the 7th October.

The SPCA said it has always been keen to bring all the animal organisations together, and feel that this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Additionally, the SPCA also hopes to raise the final stage of funds required to build their new Centre in Ta’ Qali. Here, they look forward to finally having the opportunity to care for a greater number of animals, and provide a wider range of services – something that they have been longing for quite some time.

In preparation for this day, the SPCA organised a competition for school children during the summer months. The winners will be announced on World Animal Day. Their education officer, Christina Pace, was also very active also through the summer schools to help children in their understanding of animals and their responsibilities.
World Animal Day will start off with mass and a blessing of animals. There will be farm animals as well as companion animals, reptiles and feathered friends. The aim of the day is to educate and make aware of the beautiful creatures around us whilst also providing insight on how to look after and respect them.

An array of magnificent speakers will be present, addressing topics such as interactive therapy between animals and people, young and old; protecting the creatures of the sea; dealing with over-population of strays and how to help animals.

Entertainment on the day will include a wide variety of children’s activities, pony rides, a Police Dog Show, a Fun Dog Show, Zumba!and much more. Plenty of great food, fantastic music, and lots of laughter is guaranteed. Join in on the fun, and offer a helping hand if you are able to – every bit counts!

World Animal Day will take place at Ta’Qali National Park  (entrance opposite picnic area) on Sunday Sunday 7th October from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm. Entrance is free.  More information may be obtained from email: secretary@spcamalta, tel. no: 9942 6358, website: www.spcamalta.org and Facebook page: spca malta.
