[VIDEO]Gonzi pushed out after coming election

During tomorrow’s mass meeting of the PN, Lawrence Gonzi is obviously expected to seek the people’s trust but it has been learnt that he will make a statement that he would resign from Prime Minister and Leader of the Nationalist party should he win the next election.

This is the move recommended by the PN strategy team, led by Richard Cachia Caruana and Austin Gatt. The PN hopes that such a decision would accommodate the factions that do not want Lawrence Gonzi to stay on as leader. However, this statement would also increase the uncertainty and instability in the government of the country and would intensify the contest for post-Gonzi leadership of the PN.

Very reliable sources have told ONE news that the strategy team decided that Gonzi should make this announcement just a short while before dissolving parliament and calling a general election.

In the last few days, it was decided that Lawrence Gonzi should make this statement during the traditional Independence Day mass meeting.

The strategy team was not unanimous on the decision to make Lawrence Gonzi announce his stepping down after the next election. However, Cachia Caruana and Austin Gatt are hoping in a sympathy vote whilst others believe that this would have a negative effect on the PN since the electorate would be asked to give a vote to a leaderless party.

Richard Cachia Caruana and Austin Gatt believe that the people know that Gonzi cannot do well against Joseph Muscat. They know that there are several factions in the Nationalist Party who believe that GonziPN did not work. The fact that he will be replaced immediately after the next election might encourage some lost voters to return to the PN fold.

It doesn't make sense to win the election and resign, is this a preparation for a dictatorship.

Pawlu: How can you compare 7 years of Gonzi with just 22 moths of Dr. Alfred Sant !

Din li gonzi jitlaq, min leader jekk jirbah l-elezzjoni, se tirrendi lill pn bhala partit tal bahh l`stess bhall ma implikaw il- pn fuq il-labour meta harget li dr sant kellu xi problemi ta sahha..qed insibha difficli biex nemmina, ghax tista tkun leakage apposta biex ikejlu ir-reaction tan nazzjonalisti bl-ghodda ta haddiehor. Barra min hekk , jekk din hi vera, din turi li is-sitwazzjoni tal-pn hi ferm ghar milli jidher ghax il-partit qed jillikja izjed min passatur. Haga wahda hi certa...TAVDAWX LILL GONZIPN F`XEJN

Also if as you propably tried to say that GonziPN was a sort of a so and so leader, how come this terrible disaster in our economy, finances and in his own Cabinet and Party..!!

Please be real in your comments. Gonzi is not a hero but he has made miracles with crisis management and some good decisions and some not so good. I say he did better than the 22 months of Alfred Sant.

While I will not shed one tear drop to see the gonzi go (in fact the sooner the better) -- it would be nothing less than DECEIT to not tell the electorate exactly who and what for they would be voting!!! In other words the pn should stop it's scare tactics and say fairly and squarely who in fact will be leading the pn BEFORE the election takes place and not after!!! The people have a right to know for whom they are voting for the duraction of the legislation and not only for the few weeks following the election.

Be interesting to see if the people fall for this one. First of all he should have resigned a long time ago but choose to hang on until the bitter end at the expense of the party he says he cares so much about. Secondly the problem isn't just Gonzi but the idiots who surround him. Would you really like Gatt as Prime Minister for example? Last but not least what if after the election the party refused to accept his resignation and you are stuck with him for another term?

R.Camilleri

- Wed 19-Sep-2012, 13:29

Nonsense, he would never say so. He would just start an open battle for who will get the leadership rather then focusing on the election.

The indications are that Gonzi will not resign if he wins the general elections. If at the moment he is doing everything to hold on to government, how will he be ready to give up his PN leadership in a couple of months time?. I am sure that he will come up with another trick like he did when he ran alone for the PN leadership. If he wins the general elections, he will hold on as Prime Minister until the very end of the next five years as he is doing now. Who does he think he is kidding?

Is this a reason why Simon Busuttil is contesting the elections? Wouldn't he be losing a large sum of money and other benefits like Joseph Muscat did?

I want Gonzi, and no one else, if he is elected and he wins why then should he resign, for an unknown candidate.
It`s like buying something before checking it out and with no garantee of return if you don`t like it!!!!!

joe agius

- Wed 19-Sep-2012, 11:17

So this boils down to the situation that if Gonzi is re elected and resigns, we will be electing an unknown yet leader of the party and a prime minister who we do not know yet if he has the people's trust. PN voters should beware not to head on directly in a concrete wall.

Everyone knows that when still speaker of the house gonzi had declared he was not interested in an MP's place in parliament, then conveniently changed his mind and even became leader of PN which he changed to gonzipn. Any declaration that he will step down is a half LIE, reminds me when EFA went to the president with a letter of resignation in one hand and a letter from the parliamentary group asking him to stay on. The same will happen after the next elections should , GOD forbid, gonzipn wins again.

Now it is to late for Gonzi , he is a dead man walking .
it dosent mater how much he give before the election and how much promises he make that after the election he resign as now people with open mind do not trust him or his evil clique .
he did to much harm to be trusted now.

Actually, the problem is far from Gonzi...it is Gonzi and his clique...will that go? Certainly not. So that does not change anything really!

PHILIP RIZZO

Less than 6 months ago, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi was re-appointed Leader of the PN ( and consequently Prime Minister in an incumbant PN government ) by an overwhelming majority of PN counsellors..a close to 100% vote of Guiness book of records proportions.

Now you report that a handful who form the PN 'Strategy Group' has decided that conscientous Lawrence Gonzi must go and that he should go soon. Surely this confirms the widespread belief, not only amongst PL supporters, that the present PN is controlled by the few for the benefit of a few. So much for democracy !

This is reassuring, so we vote for government with a Prime Minister surprise.
