Person close to minister in illegal export case

Reliable sources in Gozo have told maltastar.com that a person from Rabat in Gozo known to be very close to a government minister is one of the persons involved in the illegal operation to try and export 112,500 shotgun cartridges to Libya.

On Wednesday 37 year old Khalil Sadegh Harrus- a businessman from Libya – was fined €8,000 and given a two year jail sentence suspended for four years after he pleaded guilty of trying to export illegally 112,500 shotgun cartridges to Libya.

He as also charged with trying to export these cartridges without the necessary police permit and with infringing the sanctions imposed by the United Nations against Libya.

The cartridges were found last August by customs officials hidden in containers carrying Red Bull energy drinks while they were being loaded in containers to be exported to Libya. The cartridges cost €38,896.

The police are questioning several other persons in connection with this case and they are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days. It remains to be seen whether the person close to a government minister will be among those charged in court with taking part in this illegal operation.

WHAT WOULD ONE HAVE EXPECTED WITH THE SCENGEN PROTOCOL? NO NEED TO INFORM CUSTOMS THAT YOU WILL BE LEAVING MALTESE TERRITORIAL WATERS AND NO NEED TO HAVE ANY PROOF WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN EITHER.WE'RE BACK TO THE EARLY 1970'S WHEN WINSTONS.PALL MALL AND MARLBOROS WERE COMING IN BY THE TRUCKLOADS;ONE HAS TO REMEMBER IN THOSE DAYS BOATS WERE NOT THAT FAST AND BIG AS THEY ARE TODAY,THEN CAME THE PATROL BOATS DOING THIER ROUNDS AND MOST CONTRABAND WAS NEARLY ERADICATED,SMUGGLERS STARTED ENDING UP IN PRISON EITHER WAY MINTOFF KNEW HOW TO STOP THE SCOURGE OF CONTRABAND.
