The president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff by sending a tweet describing him as an important figure in postwar Mediterranean.

German Socialist Martin Schulz is the 14th president of the parliament since 1979. He will lead the EP until the next European elections in June 2014.
