Two French medical students Francois Jean-Paul Franques and Mathias Perazzi ended up in court charged with getting onto a boat during the night between Saturday and Sunday and paddled towards Portomaso using a traffic sign instead of an oar.

When their prank was over the two 20 year old students abandoned the boat which crashed against the rocks.

Their lawyer said this was just a prank and the students were a bit drunk because they were happy and they are now sorry for what they did.

They pleaded guilty and were sentenced not to break the law for another 18 months and were ordered to pay €400 in compensation to the owner of the boat.

The court said that if it transpires that the damage they caused costs more than €400 they will have to pay the difference.

so you have to pay damages when you wreck a boat and get away scot free for sexually assualting a teenage girl? what a distorted sense of justice our law courts dish out! if it wasn't so tragic this would be great stuff for comedy!
