Hundreds of persons who have been waiting months and even years to have their cataracts removed are being contacted by the health authorities and asked to go to Mater Dei Hospital to be given information about their operation. They are being told that they will have their cataracts removed within the next three months.
The Health Ministry has set up an action plan to try and reduce the waiting list for cataract operations as much as possible before the coming election.
Before leaving Mater Dei Hospital they are given information about what to do and not to do to prepare themselves for the operation. This information is usually given on the eve of the operation and not three months before but it helps to reassure people that the operation will really take place within three months.
Even before the 2008 general election people on the waiting list at Mater Dei Hospital used to be contacted to be given an appointment for the operation they had been waiting for but although the election came and went the operations were still not carried out.
