Debono: Malta is being run by a mafia

MP Franco Debono said in his blog that Health Minister Joe Cassar must be held to account about the irregularities in the selection process of medical consultants where criteria where changed to accommodate applicants because they were well connected.

Debono wrote: “The Health Minister should keep in mind that according to the doctrine of ministerial responsibility he is accountable for whatever happens under his portfolio, especially if it is a serious matter. I also hope the Commissioner of Police is keeping himself updated about this issue...”

He said that it unacceptable that there are PN MPs like Francis Zammit Dimech who believe that “Ministers are above the law, and they are not to be examined by anyone, not even by parliament…”

He said that the system of democratic and accountable government degenerates into a mafia where support is based on unquestioning loyalty and fear and showed his concerns that the “local political system has come to be run on the lines of certain underworld associations which need not even be named.”

Debono wrote: “When I criticised the selection process (to appoint the medical consultants), as I have every right to do, as an elected member of parliament, my colleague Minister Joe Cassar, sarcastically” said that he was getting on to Labour’s bandwagon.

Debono concluded: “The Minister should note that these issues are not partisan in nature, they are issues of a national interest which go beyond party politics. The Minister should stop politicising this issue just because a relative of Dolores Cristina is involved.”
