Olympics

London 2012 closed with a spectacular show as the Olympics said farewell and thank you to the British people and prepared tor the journey to Brazil and Rio des Janeiro 2016.

Diane Borg carried the flag for Malta.

The final medal ceremony took place in the packed stadium, the men’s marathon won by Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich.

The games ended with the United States topping the medal table with 46 gold, China second on 36 and Great Britain third with 29 gold, their best result since 1908.

Football

Manchester City came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-2 in the Community shield, the curtain-raiser to the new premier league which starts next week-end.

Fernando Torres gave Chelsea the lead neat the break but the premier champions hit back with three quick second half goals to lift their first silverware of the new season.

St Mirren head the Scottish Premier after a 2-0 win at Dundee Hearts go second following a 1-1 draw by Hibernian.

Golf
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy tamed the Kiawah course in Carolina to win the US PGA, eight strokes ahead of England’s David Lynn who carded his best major result to finish second.

It’s McIlroy’s second US title and takes him back to the world number one spot.
