From official statistics on waste management issued by the European Union among the 27 EU Member States, it is clear that that our country is far from winning any Olympic medal in waste management.
A new report on how Member States manage their municipal waste shows startling differences across the EU. Out of 27 EU Member States, Malta was placed 3rd from the bottom with only 9 points.
The EU Commission is preparing roadmaps for countries that are not delivering - including Malta - to urgently open discussions with national authorities, so as to address these shortcomings.
Malta is being considered as one of the countries with severe deficits where waste management is concerned.
The precise words written in the report were: MALTA SHOWS DEFICIT IN ALL KINDS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT ISSUES.
All this contrasts greatly to what Wasteserv and the Ministry for Resouces and Rural Affairs have been boasting about last week.
"This is purely a propogandistic ploy to allure the electorate," said PL spokesperson for the Environment MP Leo Brincat.
