Electricity at ST Microelectronics in Kirkop, is still disrupted since 06.00h this Sunday morning which followed after a cut of a quarter of an hour at about 03.00h. Damaged cables caused the major power cut disrupting the work flow. This power cut will mean a loss of millions of euros in production and exports as work has been idle for more than 14 hours.
Back in March 2012, ST Microelectronics at Kirkop lost millions of euros in just four days. It was badly hit as it fell behind in its export orders as two major power cuts disrupted its work flow for five hours.
600 workers lay idle as Enemalta workers repaired cables cut and damaged by the contractor working on Triq Garibaldi.
Minister Tonio Fenech blamed the recession on ST Microelectronics as the electronics sector registered a record lower exports in Q1 this year.

- Mon 06-Aug-2012, 12:14Because of the present Government Malta is still in the dark ages literally when it comes to power production and distribution. Whilst they see the building of their new Wendy house as being of major importance they have totally ignored the areas which should have got priority. How long can a company like ST Microelectronics put up with losing millions before they pull the plug and move somewhere else?

- Sun 05-Aug-2012, 18:17After 25 years of Nationalist Party rule, Malta is still dependent on the obsolete, Marsa, 56 year old power plant;an unpaid for 25 year old second hand Delimara plant; a cancer inducing, "smokey", experimental, additional Delimara blunder; and still 2/3 years away from connecting to a decidedly shaky, Sicilian mainland link.
