Man dies after hit by car on unlit zebra crossing

Salvatore Cilia, the elderly man who was hit by a car on 9 July 2012 in Birzebbuga while using the zebra crossing died last Saturday. He was taken to hospital where he was found to be suffering from brain damage. A magisterial inquire is underway to establish what happened.

The driver who hit him was driving very slowly so much so that the elderly man remained on the zebra crossing when the car hit him. The zebra crossing which is in front of the local police station is unlit and it is difficult for drivers to see persons crossing it at night.

I have been writing for years that these are death traps. An unlit zebra crossing is more dangerous than not having a zedra crossing at all. It is a shame that all zebra crossings in Bugibba are death traps.

Driving very slowly...does that make it okay then?!? its a zebra crossing, and assuming the paint on the floor was visible enough, he should have stopped!! he should be prosecuted!
