The nineteenth edition of the Premju Anzjan tas-Sena was launched today at the Dingli Day Centre for the Elderly.

The Day Centres for the elderly are very popular with Maltese seniors citiziens. 70 workers are employed within these centres which serve as an educational and  a recreational source for the elderly. Nineteen day centres are spread all over Malta, providing service to circa 2000 senior citizens.

The Premju Anzjan tas-Sena celebrates the achievement of a senior citizien in the field of voluntary work, and is given to that person whose character and activity is an inspiration to others.

A Special Award will also be given to a resident who attends an elderly home/day centre.  The selection board will give this award to an elderly person who has been recognized for improving the quality of life of the elderly who attends the home/day centre. Premju Anzjan tas-Sena challenges the negative attitude of some that look at ageing as the worst phase in life. The Award, in fact, celebrates active ageing.

Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea said that although the elderly stop from formal employment when they reach retirement age, several of them invest a lot of their time in clubs, bands, social and religious organizations, political movements, local councils, parishes and others.

During the event, Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea also announced the board that will be evaluating the submissions. The board is composed of Chairperson: Mr Frank Farrugia.

Members: Ms. Julie Bajada, Bro Martin Borg, Ms. Lilian Miceli Farrugia, Ms. Julie Gatt, Ms. Sharone Micallef, Mr Aaron Simpson and Mr Trevor Zahra. Secretary: Ms. Catherine Brincat
