With only eight days to the start of the London Olympics, events away from the athletes are still making the headlines.

Unions are threatening to go on strike at London’s airports with cross border inspection controls expected to be worst hit.

Coupled with the security staff fiasco, officials fear London could become a nightmare for competitors and visitors alike.

 

Golf

The 2012 Open starts today at the Royal Lytham and St Annes course in Lancashire with the world’s top golfers ready to pit their skills against one of the world’s toughest links courses.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and last years winner Darren Clarke are among the people’s favourites to win this year’s Open.

Football

Chelsea look set to sign Brazilian star Oscar after he underwent a medical in London yesterday.
Oscar is in England with Brazil’s Olympic squad and his club Internacional are believed to have agreed a 25million pound transfer.

UEFA have named Marco Borg as referee for the Europa League second round qualifier between FK Mlade Bolesav of the Czech Republic and Thor Akureyri of Iceland.

Alan Camilleri, Sammy Attard and Fyodor Zammit have also been appointed as match officials
