A 29 year old man from Gambia has been sent to jail for six months because he tried to escape from the Safi Detention Centre last Monday.

His lawyer told the court that the man is passing through a difficult time as his wife has just left him.

The man pleaded guilty to all the charges brought against him. He was jailed for six months.

In the march held to defend the human rights of migrants last week migrants who addressed the activity said that conditions at the Safi Detention Centre are worse than the Corradino Corrective Facility. The march was held after a migrant from Mali - Mamadou Kamara – was killed on 30 June 2012 after he escaped from Safi Detention Centre. Two Detention Security Guards have been charged with his murder.

The United Nations Commission for Human Refugees (UNCHR) estimates that since the beginning of the year over 1,000 irregular migrants have arrives in Malta. UNCHR says that Malta needs to be helped to deal with irregular migration.
