The EU is set to increase pressure on Syria with a proposal for new sanctions, expected to include an asset freeze, travel bans and the searching of ships which are suspected of carrying arms shipments to Syria when in territorial waters, the Wall Street Journal says.

However, the paper reports that some member states have asked for more time to consider the proposed sanctions, in particular the list of people to be targeted, which currently stands at 25, and the ordering of ship inspections.

Member states are said to be in favour of stepping up the pressure on Syria following the continuing violence by president Bashar al-Assad's regime and EU foreign ministers arrive in Brussels next week to discuss the situation and finalise sanctions.
