RCC "replies" but does not deny one single word

Richard Cachia Caruana hase sent in the following declaration about the evidence shown by maltastar.com that he has said that he has blamed Minister Lawrence Gatt and President and Deputy Prime Minister Guido de Marco for the attempt o his life. He has not disputed a single word carried by maltastar.com, quoting himn directly.

On Monday afternoon maltastar.com reported that Lawrence Gatt is one of the PN Ministers that Richard Cachia Caruana believes was implicated in the attempted murder on him in December 1994. Evidence passed on to maltastar.com has Cachia Caruana saying: “Ghax remember, when talking about Meinrad and the father and Lawrence Gatt – frankly fucking hell okay at the end of the day if it wasn’t for Lawrence Gatt and his escaped son, right, nothing would have happened to me…”

On Tuesday maltastar.com said it has seen evidence of Cachia Caruana saying: “And I have no doubt, whatever he (Guido de Marco) says, even though I talk to him and I smile at him and we sort of get on – I have no doubt li hu lil Maurice Calleja qallu ‘din mhux xi cucata ta’ Richard Cachia Caruana’ – I have no doubt right because of the way things developed."

Cachia Caruana also said: "...plus there was Guido of course – let us not forget what I have been through, with Guido’s children defending the person who tried to kill me? “

Cachia Caruana believes that there was an attempt to assassinate him because he was blamed for putting pressure on Prime Minister Fenech Adami to get Agriculture Minister Lawrence Gatt and Brigadier Maurice Calleja to resign because of their children’s involvement in drug trafficking.

On Tuesday evening Cachia Caruana sent us his "reply" that does not deny a single word of the recordings of the conversation we reported:

"There were no Nationalist ministers implicated in the attempt on my life, nor did I ever think or say that there were. To suggest that I believed that Nationalist Ministers were so implicated, and that I continued to work with them, is shocking and inconceivable.

"Anybody who followed the trial of the three individuals charged with attempting to kill me in 1994 will know exactly who I – but more importantly, the police – believe was involved in that attempt.

"Maltastar.com’s claims, 18 years after the attempt on my life, that the persons behind my attempted murder are persons other than those identified by the police and prosecution are disgusting and completely out of order. But it is entirely in line with the Labour Party’s largely successful attempts back then to sabotage the trial of two of those individuals by undermining the credibility of the main witnesses. They would have done the same with the third individual had he not confessed and admitted his guilt.

"The Labour Party’s strategy then was undemocratic and contrary to the rule of law. Today, 18 years later, the Labour Party has not changed in this respect, and it will use any means to gain its narrow, partisan ends."
