Much had been expected of England but they simply were not good enough.
Italy outplayed them in every area of the pitch and when push came to shove, the Italians outmuscled England to create the better chances.
Goal-less after ninety minutes and extra-time, the lottery of the penalty shoot-out at least gave England a fifty-fifty chance but they failed to do so.
England have not won a penalty shootout in six major tournaments, now they have another dismal failure to add to that list.
Italy fully deserved their victory and a semi-final place against Germany next Thursday.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso won an incident packed European Formula 1 Grand Prix ahead of the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettal looked to have the race in his pocket until mechanical problems forced him to retire and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton crashed when running second after getting hit by the Williams of Maldonado.
With a win each from their opening games, Valletta and Hibernian’s go head to head tonight in the Euro Cup.
Tonight’s game should have added spice as former Hib’s coach Mark Miller leads Valletta out against his old club for the first time.

The draws for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League take place in Nyon in Switzerland today
Valletta are in the Champions League while Hibernian’s, B’Kara and Floriana are in the Europa League.
Wimbledon starts today with Britain looking to Andy Murray to give them their first Men’s winner since the 1930’s
For Murray to win he will have to get past the world’s top two players, Novak Djokavic and Rafael Nadal.
