European competition commissioner Joaquín Almunia has given Google the chance to propose remedies in four main areas of concern and potentially avoid a massive fine, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The internet search engine has been pushing for a settlement in an anti-trust case brought by more than a dozen companies, which according to a Google spokesman, the company disagree with.

Almunia said, "If Google comes up with an outline of remedies which are capable of addressing our concerns, I will instruct my staff to initiate the discussions in order to finalise a remedies package."
