The Malta Racing Club held a full meeting comprising of 11 trot and 1 flat race with the highlights of the day being the two Assikura Championship Finals for trotters that were neither of French nor of Swedish origin.

The programme also had 3 Premier Category races which is not usually the case in one programme but seeing as during the next registration these same horses will be racing in the Tazza l-Kbira Championship starting in a fortnight this made sense.

With the weather giving us a break there was a good turnout and it was very nice to see many children dressed up in their carnival costumes as for the first time the Malta Racing Club encouraged them to turn up in costumes staging a competition.

We had thrilling finishes with very good timings one of which will be talked about for many weeks being the Assikura Championship Final for Premier, Gold and Silver category horses which was won by outsider Knockout Molar.  This 10-year old Danish horse driven for the first time by Carl Caruana was situated at the back of the field until about 300m from the finish when entering the final straight he produced an incredible sprint to take his 2nd consecutive and 3rd victory in Malta.  Incidentally his three victories where all registered by different drivers.

The Assikura final for Silver, Bronze and Copper category horses was also won by a horse starting as an outsider.  This was American born 7-year old Prince Regent driven by Tony Demanuele.

The premier category races were on speed and with timings befitting this category with Nono de Crouay driven by Melvin Farrugia and Nuage de Bourgogne driven by Charles Camilleri registering 1’14”8 and 1’14”9 respectively. The other premier category winner was Nec Carmolo timed at 1’16”2/km.
